About the QPolar Challenge

The challenge is a 310 nautical mile race on skis to the 1996 North Magnetic Pole, across some of the most desolate and dangerous terrain in the world. It is one of the most extreme endurance tests known to man.
In 2003, Chris Mcleod and Tony Martin captained the first and second place teams, respectively, in the first ever Polar Race. On their return to England, they decided to set up and run an alternative challenge themselves, and formed the Challenge Group.
2012’s gruelling race starts from Resolute Bay on the north side of Cornwallis Island in the northern province of Nunavut, Canada. It takes the contestants a total of 385 miles, by ski or foot, across some of the most desolate terrain in the world to the 1996 certified position of the Magnetic North Pole.
Before the challenge starts, Competitors participate in a 4 day, 65-mile (105 km) training expedition in which they set off from Resolute, Nunavut in northern Canada to the Polar Challenge starting point.
They must carry all their equipment by pulling 54Kg pulks (120lb) and are likely to lose a third of their body weight.
During the trek, teams must overcome immense physical and mental strain, navigate stretches of freezing water and avoid the very real danger of polar bears.
It will be for all of them the most amazing, revealing and personal challenge they are ever likely to undertake.
Teams are fully supported by experts providing full training, safety cover, specialist equipment and advice. They will be in touch during the race via satellite phones.
For many this is an opportunity to achieve something truly amazing, inspire others to achieve too and raise a great deal of money for their chosen charities.
